Without Jesus we're going the wrong way

    Shoebox temple from previous lessons,
(if you haven't made a temple:
cut a 2 qt. milk carton in half,
turn it upside down with the flat end on top,
    cut a doorway,
cover it with some construction paper
use it to represent a temple.
    Paul figure,
    Priest figure (optional),

2 treasure maps or 2 sets of clues, (for details, see the snack to hide listed next),
    A snack to hide
Before class hide a snack somewhere in the room.
Make a false treasure map or set of clues that will not lead to the snack.
Then make a treasure map or a set of clues for the kids to follow that will lead to the snack .

  • You will repeat this after the story with the real map or clues leading to the snack.

    Action Game: Treasure Hunt

The object of this game is for the kids to follow a treasure map or a list of clues that leads to no where. After all their efforts, there is no treasure to be found.

Make a treasure map or a list of clues to follow.
But when they get to the end they will find nothing.

  • Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer:

    Telling the Story:
Were you able to find the treasure?
How did that make you feel?
    Cheated,
    Mad,
    Disappointed.
    I'll bet you feel cheated.
You followed the clues or map that promised to lead you to treasure.  And there wasn't any!
The map, (clues), you followed wasn't the right way at all was it?
You were actually going the wrong way!
Today we're learning that without Jesus we're going the wrong way.
We're going to hear a story about a man who was going the wrong way.
It was just like he was following a map (or clues) that led to nowhere, just like you did in your game.
Listen carefully to find out why he was going the wrong way.
Lay out the Promised Land mat.
    This man's name was Saul.
Place the Saul figure next to the Dead Sea. (If you made him a flip figure, show him with his evil face).
Saul was a very religious man.
He studied his  Bible and went to the temple regularly.
Place the temple next to the Dead Sea.
Place the priest figure, (or use a Fisher Price or similar type man figure) in front of the temple.
But Saul did not like all the talk he was hearing about Jesus.
One day he decided that he was going to make people stop telling others about Jesus.
He had heard there were even people way up here in a town called Damascus, telling others about Jesus.
Place some blocks to represent houses at the top of the mat near the Sea of Galilee.
Place 2 or 3 Fisher Price or similar type men figures next to one of the block houses.
So Saul went to see the priest.
    Walk Saul to the priest.
He convinced the priest to give him letters that said he could arrest and put in jail these people up here who were telling others about Jesus.
Point to the people in the town of Damascus.
So Paul and some other men began traveling to the town of Damascus up here.
Add 2 more figures and let the kids take turns walking the figures up the mat.
Have them stop before they reach the town of Damascus.
Just as Saul was getting close to the town, a bright light from heaven flashed all around him.
Shine the flashlight on the Saul figure turning it on and off like lightening.
    Saul fell to the ground.
Set Saul figure over on his side.
Then he heard a voice from heaven say to him, "Saul! Why are you hurting me?"
Saul was afraid.  He said, "Who are you, Lord?"
And the voice answered, "I am Jesus! And you are hurting me by hurting people who tell others about me."
Jesus told Saul to get up and go into Damascus.
But instead of going there to hurt Jesus' followers, he was to wait there for someone to tell him what to do.
    So Saul stood up.
    Stand Saul figure up.
But when he stood up, he was blind.  He could not see anything.
The men with him had to lead him into the town of Damascus.
Walk the 3 figures into the town.
Stand them in front of another 'block' house away from the followers of Jesus figures.
Saul waited there for 3 days.
Meanwhile, God talked to another man who was a follower of Jesus.
Point to one of the followers of Jesus figures.
The Lord told this man to go and find Saul at the house where Saul was staying.
Move the man a step forward.
Well this man had heard how much Saul hated people who follow Jesus.
He said, "Oh no! Lord!  That man, Saul, wants to hurt us.
He's hurt lots of people in Jerusalem.
And now he's come all the way up here to hurt us!"
But Jesus said to him, "Go, because I have chosen him to tell others about me, too.
So this man went to see Saul.
    Walk the figure to Saul.
He said to Saul, "Brother Saul, The Lord Jesus sent me to you."
This man laid his hands on Saul.
Touch him to the Saul figure.
And immediately Saul felt something like fish scales fall off his eyes.
    He could see again!
Saul got up and was baptized and was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Instead of hurting people for telling others about Jesus, he became their friends.
If you made him a flip figure, flip him to show his kind face.
And he started to tell others about Jesus, too.
Saul was very religious and often went to church.
How was he going the wrong way?
    He didn't believe in Jesus.
What was Saul like before he met Jesus?
    He was mean.
    He wanted to hurt people.
He hated Jesus and all the people who loved Jesus.
Even though he often went to church and studied his Bible he was mean and wanted to hurt people!?
    How can that be?
    He didn't know Jesus
That's right. Without Jesus he was going the wrong way.
It's not enough to go to church often and to study the Bible.
Even if we do those things we can still be mean and want to hurt others.
We can even hate people even though we go to church and study our Bible.
If we don't know and love Jesus, going to church and reading our Bible is just like following a treasure map (or clues) with no treasure at the end.
Without Jesus we're going the wrong way.
Asking God to help us know and love Jesus so that we won't be going the wrong way.
    Treasure Hunt Snack:
Give the class the real treasure map or list of clues to find the snack to share together.
