    Today's Story:

    Jesus' Ascension
    Acts 1, Matthew 24
    Optional Memory verse:
"When the Son of Man comes, he will be seen by
everyone.  It will be like lightening flashing in the
sky that can be seen everywhere." Matt 24: 27
International Children's Bible, New Century Version

When Jesus comes back the whole world will see Him.
  • Materials Needed:
    Promised Land mat
    Children's Bible
Christ figure (before class attach a string to him so you can pull him up for his ascension, (make the string about 4 feet or 122 cm long),
5 or 6 Fisher Price or similar type men figures
white generic paper plates (dinner size, one per child or at least 6)
    cotton balls or cotton batting,
    glue or glue sticks',
    stapler,
    masking tape
plain bed sheet (for a backdrop),
    2  flashlights

  • Craft:  Paper plate clouds to use during story time.
Before the story have the kids make clouds by gluing cotton onto paper plates.
Staple them together end to end so they make a row of clouds.
They will need to be at least 6 plates in width (They will be stretched between 2 chairs and used as a background for a puppet stage).

  • For younger ages, skip the Bible baseball and just let them try to fool each other.

Action Game: Fool me if you can - A version of Bible Baseball

The object of the game is for each child to try to fool the others by telling 2 things about himself, one of which is true and one which is untrue.  The other team has to huddle and try to guess what is the "tall tale"

Make 4 bases on the floor with masking tape X's to represent a Baseball diamond.
Divide the class into 2 teams. (If the class is too small, have one team play against the teacher).
Team 1 is up to bat and lines up behind home plate.
Team 2 is in the outfield and "huddles" behind one of the bases.
The first batter has to tell something true and something false about himself.
The outfielders try to guess what is untrue.
If they guess wrong, the batter goes to 1'st base and the next batter is up.
If they guess right it's an out for the team and the batter  goes to the end of the batting line.
For any non Americans playing this:
Make 4 X's on the floor with masking tape in a diamond shape. Each X will be 2 - 3 meters apart.
Choose 1 X to be home plate, the X to the right of that is 1'st base, 2n'd base is opposite home plate, 3'rd base is to the left of home plate.
Every time a batter "makes a hit" he stands on  first base,
If the next batter "makes a hit", he goes to first base and the first batter moves to second base, and so on.
Every time a batter makes it back to home plate his team gets one point.
3 outs and the teams switch places.

  • Telling the story:

  •

  • If you have a small group repeat the drama letting the kids take turns being the string puller, angels, and flashlight holders.

    Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer:

  • Telling the Story:

Make a "puppet type" stage with 4 chairs,

Lay out the Promised Land mat
Set a chair facing backward over top of the Dead Sea
Set another chair next to it and facing backward (it will be over the Jordan River.
Put the sheet over the chairs to be a backdrop,
Set a chair  on each side of the first two chairs, but slightly in front of the first 2. (also facing backward).
Lay the row of clouds across these two chairs and tape each end to the chair backs. (Jesus will ascend so that He goes in between the clouds and the sheet.
If using adult sized chairs it will take about 6 plates to stretch between the 2 chairs. Add more plates to the ends if necessary to make it fit).
To tell today's story I need 2 of you to be angels, 2 of you to be flashlight holders, and one of you to be a string puller.
Pick some children for these parts,
Tell the angels that when the time comes in the story they are to jump up and give a message to Jesus' followers.
Until that time they will sit and listen to the story with the others.
Tell the flash light holders that they will shine their lights onto the angels when the angels jump up.
Tell the string puller he will get up and stand behind the sheet when you tell him to during the story.
He/she will pull Jesus up into the clouds when you cue him.
Was it easy to fool each other in our game?
Was it fun to fool each other?
Can you think of a time when you were fooled when you didn't like it?
    Discuss kids answers.
In a game it can be fun to fool each other, but in real life it's no fun to be fooled.
Today we're learning something very important that Jesus does not want us to be fooled about.
Sometimes we hear on the news that someone claims to be Jesus.
How can we know if that person is really Jesus or if he's just fooling people into making them think that he's Jesus?
    Discuss kids answers.
Well today we're learning that when Jesus comes back the whole world will see Him.
I want you to listen very carefully to what Jesus told his disciples before He died.
    Read Matthew 24: 23-27
What did Jesus say it would look like when He comes back?
    Like lightening
Why did Jesus tell His disciples this?
    So they wouldn't be fooled.
Jesus wasn't the only one who told the disciples about how  Jesus would come back.
So listen very carefully to find out who else told about how  Jesus is coming back.
After Jesus came alive He showed Himself to many people.
Place Christ figure on the mat.
Then He took his followers to the top of the big hill called the Mt. of Olives.
Add 4 or 5 Fisher Price or similar type figures to represent his followers.
While they were watching, Jesus went up into the sky.
Cue the string puller stand behind the sheet and pull Christ up through the clouds.
(Have him set Christ down on the floor on the other side of the sheet and rejoin the class).
The disciples watched him until he was hidden by the clouds.
Hold 2 or 3 of the men figures so they are facing upward.
Suddenly 2 angels stood next to Jesus' followers.
Cue the angels to jump up.
Cue the flashlight holders to shine their lights onto the angels.
The angels asked the disciples, "Why are you looking into the sky?
    Jesus went to heaven.
He will come back right through the clouds just like you saw him go."
Have the angels repeat the message:
    "Jesus went to heaven.
He will come back through the clouds."
Cue the angels to sit down and the flashlight holders to turn off their lights.
Who else told about how Jesus is coming back?
    The angels.
    Where did Jesus go?
Back to heaven to be with God
How did Jesus tell us He is going to come back?
Like lightening so the whole world will see.
How did the angels tell us Jesus will come back?
    Through the clouds,
    From the sky.
How will we know for sure that it's Jesus when He comes back?
Because he's coming from the sky and the whole world will see him.
It will be bright like lightening.
What if you saw a man on TV who said He was Jesus.
    Would you believe him?
Jesus wants us to know how He's coming back so we won't be fooled  by people who claim to be Jesus.
Thank God that Jesus and the angels told us how Jesus is coming back.
Ask Him to help us remember and to keep us from being fooled by people who try to make us think they are Jesus.
  • Optional Snack:  Popcorn or homemade popcorn ball clouds
Encourage the kids make a cloudy sky of popcorn before they eat their popcorn, or
Make homemade popcorn balls with the kids and have them make them into cloud shapes.

Supplemental Bible Readings:  The Home Sower,
    (Suggested daily readings)

  • Materials Needed: Jesus sends the Holy Spirit
    Promised Land mat
    Children's Bible
Flashlight and batteries (with the batteries taken out)
    electric hair dryer
    play dough
    masking tape
baggies and pennies for an action game:
Fill a baggie for each child with the same number of pennies in each. The bag of pennies will represent gas for a car.  In the game the kids "run out of gas"
To determine the number of pennies:
In the action game you will put a row of X's, 2 to 3 ft. apart, (1 meter), on the floor from one end of the room to the other.
Estimate about how many X's will you need to cross the room.
Divide that number in half and put that many pennies in each baggie.
Optional Snack:  Leftovers or your choice.
Two weeks from now you will need a Paul Figure:
    Suggestion:
If you're making a homemade Paul, make him as a flip figure who flips from an evil man to a good man.
