  • Game:  Uh oh. You're in Trouble
Before class make a set of cards out of some index cards.
Have enough index cards for every child to pick one,
On one card draw a large black dot.
    Ask the kids,
"What happens when you do something wrong?
    Discuss their answers.
Imagine if every time you did something wrong instead of you getting punished, someone else got punished in your place".
    Tell the kids:
"Today we're going to play a game where we're pretending that one person gets in trouble and has to go sit in the bad chair.
But they can try to tag someone else,
Then that other person has to take the punishment for the first child and go sit in the bad chair."
Designate one chair to be the bad chair.
    Make up scenarios such as,
"Someone got mad at his brother and smashed his brother's favorite toy. Let's find out who".
Have each child pick a card.
The child who gets the card with the black dot is "in trouble" (Make sure the kids understand that this is for pretend).
All the other kids wag a finger at him and say, "You're in trouble!"
    Then they run.
The child with the black dot tries to tag someone.
The tagged child has to sit in the chair while all the children count aloud to ten.
    Repeat with more scenarios.

  • Close in Prayer:

We're going to pray quietly to ourselves right now.

I want each of you to think of the times:

  •

Have a time of silent prayer so any children who wants to, can pray for forgiveness and ask Jesus to become their special friend.

    Close:

  • Telling the Story:
What would it be like if every time you did something wrong someone else was punished for you?
Do you think that would be fair?
I brought a heart pocket today.
Show the kids the big heart pocket that you made.
Let's imagine that this heart is our heart.
Now let's imagine that these black dots are the wrong things that we do.
Hold up the baggie with the black dots.
Let's put some black dots in our heart for all the times that we say mean and nasty things to people.
Put several dots inside the heart.
Now let's put some more dots in for all the times we wish something bad would happen to someone.
    Add some more dots.
Now let's put in some more dots for all the times that we hit our hurt someone.
    Add some more dots.
Now let's put in some more dots for all the times we sneak the best for ourselves.
    Add some more black dots.
Now let's put in some more dots for all the times we push to the front of the line so we can be first.
    Add some more dots.
Now let's put in some more dots for all the times we don't tell the truth.
    Add some more dots.
Now let's put some more dots in for all the times we sneak and do things that we were told not to do.
    Add some more dots.
Our heart is getting very full isn't it?
Show the kids the inside of the heart pocket with all the dots.
Today we're learning that Jesus died for all the wrong things that we do.
Last week we learned that Jesus was praying in a garden.
Lay out the Promised Land mat
Then some soldiers came and took him away.
Place Christ figure next to the Dead Sea in between 2 other figures to represent soldiers.
They took Him to the house of the high priest.
Place the priest figure on the mat and walk Jesus to the priest figure.
The high priest was the boss of all the priests.
All the leading priests along with a crowd of people were there, too.
We'll pretend that these are more priests and some of the crowd.
Place 2 or 3 Fisher Price or similar type figures next to the priest figure.
The priests were very angry with Jesus.
They wanted him to die because He said he was God's son.
But Jesus hadn't done anything wrong.
Let's pretend that this is Jesus' heart.
Show the kids the small heart.
Are there any black dots inside of Jesus' heart?
Show the kids the inside of this heart
No.  Jesus doesn't have any black dots inside his heart.
That's because Jesus never pushed in line to make himself be first.
He never said mean, things to be nasty.
He never hit or hurt someone.
    He never disobeyed his parents.
He never lied, or cheated, or took something that wasn't his.
Jesus is perfect. He never did anything wrong.
Tape the smaller heart onto Jesus' chest.
Even though Jesus was perfect the priests wanted him to die on a cross.
But they weren't allowed to order Jesus to be killed on a cross.
Only a king or a governor could do that.
So the priests took Jesus to see a man named Governor Pilate.
Place another figure on the mat to represent a governor.
Walk Jesus, the priest ,and the crowd to Pilate.
Governor Pilate asked Jesus many questions to try to find out what Jesus did that was wrong.
But Pilate couldn't find any reason to give an order for Jesus to be killed on a cross.
    Jesus hadn't done anything wrong.
Pilate wanted to let Jesus go free.
But the priests and the crowd started shouting, "Kill Jesus on a cross!"
"Why?" Pilate asked.  "Jesus hasn't done anything wrong.  There is no reason to kill him."
But the people shouted even louder, "Kill Jesus on a cross!"
The priests and the crowd were very angry.
Pilate was afraid they were going to start a riot.
He did not want to order Jesus to be killed.
But the people insisted that he let them kill Jesus on a cross.
So Pilate turned Jesus over to them.
Walk Jesus, the priest and the crowd away.
They made a crown from some thorny sticks and put it on his head.
Then they smashed the crown into his head to make the thorns hurt him.
They put a purple robe on him and made fun of Him and spit in His face.
Then they took the robe off and whipped him.
They nailed Jesus' hands and feet to a cross.
Lay the cross down and place the Christ figure on top of it.
Attach Christ figure with a rubber band
Then they stuck the cross in the ground and Jesus hung on that cross all day.
Stand the cross up (put it in a lump of play dough to make it stand up).
Do you know why God let Jesus get killed on a cross?
God was punishing Jesus for all the wrong things that we do.
God was punishing Jesus so he won't have to punish us for all the times that:
Slowly pour the black dots from the big heart into Jesus' heart as you name these:
    We disobey our parents,
And say mean and nasty things to others.
For all the times that we lie or cheat,
For all the times that we take the best for ourselves,
For all the times that we wish bad things would happen to someone.
For all the times that we hit or hurt someone.
God punished Jesus for all the wrong things that we do.
Jesus died on that cross because He loves us and wants each one of us to be friends with God.
    Look at our heart now.
Show the kids that the heart is empty.
    It's empty isn't it?
We're not full of bad things any more are we?
When we ask Jesus to forgive us for all the wrong things that we do, this is what our hearts look like to God.
Show the kids the empty heart again.
Jesus wants to forgive each and every one of you for all the wrong things you do.
But only you can ask Jesus to forgive you.
Your mother or father can't do it for you.
All you have to do is tell God that you want Jesus to forgive you, too, for all the wrong things that you've done.
And ask Him to be your special friend.
And the Bible tells us that He will forgive you because He loves you very much.
And He'll help you to want to do right things.
    when you said mean things,
    hit or hurt someone,
    took the best for yourself,
told a lie, cheated, or took what wasn't yours,
    or disobeyed your parents.
Thanking God that Jesus died on the cross for all the wrong things that we do.
Asking God to help us tell Him about the wrong things that we do and to help us want to do what's right.
