| Game: Kings and
Servants Guessing Game |
-
Designate 1 child stand in the center
of the circle as king
-
| The king thinks of a food then says to
his servants, | |
| Telling the Story: |
-
It was too hot for people to wear
shoes. So they wore sandals.
-
Their feet got hot and dirty.
-
Does anybody remember what a person
did whenever he or she came in from being outside?
-
Washed his feet
-
Washing someone's feet was considered a
dirty job.
-
Only servants washed people's
feet.
-
No one else would even think of doing
such a lowly job.
-
In today's story Jesus wanted to teach
his disciples something important.
-
I want you to listen carefully to find
out what he wanted to teach them.
-
Jesus and his disciples were upstairs
in a house.
-
Let's build a house with these blocks
and this lid.
-
Make 4 pillars for the shoebox lid to sit
on with 2 or 3 stacked blocks in each pillar.
-
Place the shoebox lid on top of the
pillars.
-
They were sitting at a table having a
very special meal called the Passover supper.
-
Place 2 or 3 blocks side by side on the box
lid to represent a table.
-
Place Jesus at the head of the 'table'.
-
Place some Fisher Price or similar type men
figures around the table.
-
Then Jesus did something very unusual.
-
He got up from the table and wrapped a
towel around his waist.
-
Then he filled a bowl with water.
-
I want each one of you to cup your
hands like a bowl of water.
-
Then I'll let each of you take turns
pretending that your hands are the bowl of water that Jesus used as I tell the story.
-
Jesus went to this disciple and washed
his feet.
-
Walk Christ figure to one of the man
figures.
-
Pick the figure up and touch it to the
first child's 'bowl of water' hands.
-
Return the figure to his place next to the
Christ figure.
-
Then Jesus used the towel around his
waist to dry his feet.
-
Point to the towel around Christ's waist
and make his figure bow to the feet of the man figure.
-
Then Jesus went to this man and washed
his feet.
-
Repeat with another figure and the
second child's 'bowl of water' hands.
-
Continue with all the figures except
the last one.
-
Then Jesus got ready to wash Peter's
feet,
-
Walk Jesus to the last figure,
-
Peter said to him, "No! You shall
never wash my feet!"
-
Peter didn't want Jesus to do that
lowly, dirty job that only servants did. Not Jesus. Jesus wasn't a servant.
-
But Jesus told him that he would
understand later why Jesus wanted to wash his feet for him.
-
So Jesus insisted on washing Peter's
feet, too.
-
Repeat washing Peter's feet in a child's
'bowl of water' hands.
-
Return Christ figure to the head of the
table.
-
After Jesus was all finished washing
their feet, he told them,
-
| "I'm your teacher and your
Lord. I have washed your feet. I want you to do as I have done for each
other."
Closing Discussion:
-
What did Jesus mean when he told his
disciples, "I want you to do as I have done."
-
They were to act like servants to each
other.
-
Did He mean that they were supposed
to wash each others feet?
-
He meant that they were supposed to be
willing to serve one another even if it meant doing a dirty job like washing each other's
feet.
