    Today's Story:

    The Palm Sunday Story
    Matthew 21: 1-11, Mark 11: 1-11, Luke 19: 28-40, John 12: 12-16
    Optional Memory verse:
"For God loved the world so much that he gave his only
Son. God gave his Son so that whoever believes in him
may not be lost, but have eternal life." John 3:16
International Children's Bible, New Century Version

Jesus wants to be your king.
  • Materials Needed:
    Promised land mat
    Christ figure
    Plastic donkey or horse
Fisher Price or similar type men and woman figures
    blocks
Use one block and make a die by:
sticking a piece of masking tape on each side,
writing  one of the numbers "1, 2 or 3" each side.
A set of blocks (or Lego's) for the kids to build a city gate
    masking tape
shoe box temple made in lesson 20
scraps of construction paper for the kids to make coats
    8 rocks (optional)
    Play dough
roll of green crepe paper in a gift bag

  • Set everything aside to use during story time

Craft:  Have the kids make the following items to be used in today's story:
A crowd of play dough people:
Have each child make 1 or 2 people by rolling a barrel for a body and adding a round head
    Construction paper coats:
Have each child cut scraps of construction paper into rectangle shapes to represent coats.

  • Make a game board on the floor from masking tape by:

  • Randomly place a rock (or make an X with tape) on 4 spaces in each road.

Place the cards upside down between the 2 roads.

Divide the class into 2 teams and have each team line up at opposite roads.

The last member in line from each team rolls to determine which team goes first. Highest roll wins.

The first player in line from the winning team rolls the die and advances the number of spaces rolled on the die.

If the player lands on a blank space, he stays where he is and the other team goes next.

If the player lands on a space with a rock (or an X), he takes the top clue card and must think of a story that involves Jesus and that item:

  • If he can't remember a story that involves Jesus and that item, he can ask his team for help.

    Rules of the game:

  • The teams alternate taking turns.

The first team to get all their players to the end of their road, wins.

The winning team gets to open the gift bag:

  • Game:  Praise Road Relay

This is a relay where the kids will be game pieces, the game board will be made on the floor with tape,  and the children advance by remembering stories about Jesus. The teams alternate taking turns.

Before class make a die from a block as listed above.

Before class make 8 game cards from index cards:

On each card write one of the following words:
water, hair, tree, woman, skin, boat, sisters, dead
    These are clue cards.

When a child draws a clue card, he/she has to remember a story about Jesus and that item.

Laying 2 parallel strips of masking tape about 1 foot apart
(so it looks like a road).
Make a 2'nd road next to, and parallel to the first one.
Make each road look like a game board by:
placing tape across each at about 8 inch intervals to make spaces.
Make sure each road has the same number of spaces. (There should be about 12 to 15 spaces).
    (water) Jesus was baptized
(hair) A woman washed his feet with her hair,
    (tree) Zacchaeus climbed a tree,
(woman) Woman touched Jesus' robe and was healed,
    (skin) Jesus healed a leper
    (boat) Jesus calmed the sea,
    (sisters) Mary and Martha
(dead) Jesus raised a dead man
Roll again if answered without team help.
Advance 2 spaces if answered with team help.
Can't think of any story, go back 2 spaces.
Stories not taught in class are acceptable (i.e. for water they might say Jesus turned water to wine.)
    Have each winning team member:
Tear off a strip of crepe paper and give it to someone from the losing team.
each piece should be long enough to wave as a palm branch during the story
then tear a piece off for himself.
They should all bring their streamer to story time.

  • Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer:

  • Telling the Story:
In our game we today we followed a road.
What did you expect to find in the gift bag at the end of the road?
    Discuss kids ideas
Were you surprised that it was crepe paper for streamers?
In today's story there is a crowd of people along a road.
    They expected something to happen.
You'll have to listen carefully to find out what they expected to happen.
In today's story Jesus is traveling a road.
Lay out the Promised Land mat.
But before we can tell the story we need to build a palace in Jerusalem, make another small  town, and add a road to our mat.
First we need to put the temple right here.
Put the temple at the very bottom of the mat by the Dead sea.
Now let's make a palace right here next to the temple.
Place some blocks in a rectangle shape to represent a palace.
There was a big wall all around the city of Jerusalem with gates in it.
Let's work together and build a wall with a gate right here.
Help the kids build a wall with a gate from blocks between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
Let's make the road to Jerusalem that Jesus traveled right here with tape:
Use a strip of masking tape to make a road from the middle of the mat down to the gate the children made.
There was a little town over here, just outside of Jerusalem.
Place a few blocks in a semicircle to represent the houses in a town above Jerusalem (somewhere between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean).
Let's put some people in this little town and a donkey over here by this house.
Put 2 Fisher Price type figures and the plastic horse  between the block houses.
Now we're ready to tell our story.
Today we're learning that Jesus wants to be your king.
Jesus was on the road to Jerusalem with His disciples.
Place Jesus figure on the road.
Place 3 or 4 Fisher Price type figures around him to represent his followers
As he got near to this little town, he stopped.
    Point out the little town.
He told 2 of his followers to go to the little town ahead of them.
He told them that as soon as they got into town, they would see a young donkey tied outside someone's house.
This little donkey had never been ridden before.
Jesus told them to untie the donkey and bring it to Him.
He told them that the owners of the donkey might ask why they were taking it.
He said to tell the donkey's owner that the Master needs it. And he will send it back soon.
So the 2 followers went into the little town .
Walk 2 figures to the little town.
They found a donkey tied up just like Jesus said they would.
When they started to untie the donkey, some people there asked what they were doing.
The followers told them that Jesus needed it and would send it back.
So the people let them take the donkey to Jesus.
Walk the donkey and 2 figures back to Jesus.
Jesus followers took off their coats and put them on the donkey.
Then Jesus got on the donkey and started toward Jerusalem.
A crowd of people learned that Jesus was coming.
They had heard about all the wonderful things that He had done.
So they gathered along the road.
Have the kids place their play dough figures along the road.
Now long ago it had been written in the Old Testament that God would send the people of the Promised Land a perfect king.
And that perfect king would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey.
When the people saw Jesus riding into town on a donkey they were sure that Jesus was about to become that perfect king.
Many of them threw their coats down on the road for him to walk over.
Have each child place their construction paper coats on the road.
They were so excited that they cut  branches from Palm Trees and waved them in the air.
They shouted, "Hosanna! Hosanna!" which means praise God!
The crowd was very sure that Jesus was going to march right into the city and make himself a king.
Once Jesus got into the city where do you think He would go to become a king?
    Listen to kids ideas.
As I walk Jesus and the donkey into Jerusalem I want you to pretend you're the crowd by waving your streamers and shouting, "Hosanna!"
And I want you to watch to see where Jesus goes.
Walk Jesus and the donkey through the gate.
    Walk Jesus to the temple.
    Where did Jesus go?
    To the temple
Do you think he became the king at the temple?
    Listen to kids ideas.
Jesus didn't go into the palace and put on a crown and make himself a king.
Do you think the crowd was surprised that Jesus didn't go into the palace and make himself a king?
    Is Jesus a king?
Yes, he's the king of the whole world.
Jesus isn't just the king of the Promised Land. He's the king of everyone who believes in Him.
Jesus wants to be your king, too.
How can you make Jesus your king?
By asking Him to forgive me for the wrong things that I do.
And asking Him to live in my heart.
    What's a king's job?
    To be the boss
To make rules for people to follow.
    To keep His people safe
What is the job of someone who has a king?
    To obey Him
    To serve Him
Jesus wants us to let Him be our king everyday.
How can we let Jesus be our king everyday?
Pray and ask Him help us to follow Him everyday.
When we want to do something wrong to pray and ask Him to help us do what's right.
Asking Him to forgive for when we do, do wrong things.
Thanking God that Jesus can be our king.
Ask Him to help us to let Him be our king every day.
