  • Game:  People can/Jesus can - A take off on Simon says
Have the kids line up at one end of the room
Tell the kids that every time you make a true statement they can take 2 steps forward.
Every time you make a false statement they should stand still and not move.
If they move when you said something false they have to take 2 steps backward.
The object of the game is to make it to a designated place on the other side of the room.
Give them a series of true and false statements such as:
Jesus made people with wings so they can fly (false)
People can make dead people alive (false)
    Jesus can heal the sick
    People can build airplanes
    People can make birds (false)
    etc.

    Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer: thanking God that Jesus is God and asking Him to help us to trust in him so we will live with him forever.

    Telling the Story:
Our game was about things that people can do and things that Jesus can do.
And it was about things that Jesus can do but people can't do.
Have any of you ever had a pet die?
    Let kids answer
How did you feel when you lost your pet?
    Let kids answer
Was there anything you could do to make your pet alive again?
Today we're learning that Jesus is God. Jesus can raise the dead.
Lay out the Promised land mat
Last week we learned about Mary and Martha.
They are in today's story, too.
    Let's build their house here.
Place some blocks just above the Dead Sea to represent a house.
Place 2 woman figures to represent Mary and Martha in front of their house.
Mary and Martha had a brother named Lazarus.
Place a man figure with Mary and Martha.
Jesus was in another part of the Promised Land teaching people about God.
Place Christ figure in the middle of the mat with a crowd around him.
While Jesus was there, Lazarus became sick.
    Lay the Lazarus figure down.
Mary and Martha were very worried. Lazarus kept getting sicker and sicker.
They sent someone to find Jesus and tell him that Lazarus was sick.
Place another Fisher Price type figure with Mary and Martha.
Walk that figure to Christ, and back home.
When Jesus heard about Lazarus he said, "... This has happened to bring glory to the Son of God".*
But Jesus stayed where he was for 2 more days.
    And Lazarus died.
Mary and Martha wrapped Lazarus in cloth.
Wrap the figure of Lazarus in scraps of tissue or napkin.
Then they put him in a cave and covered up the doorway with a stone.
Make a small cave from some rocks and put the figure in.
Cover the entrance with another rock.
Return Mary and Martha figures to their house.
Jesus knew that Lazarus had died and told his followers that they must go to see him.
It took 2 more days for Jesus and his follower to travel back to the town where Mary and Martha lived.
Walk Jesus and some of the figures around him to near Mary and Martha's house.
Martha ran out to meet Jesus.
    Walk Martha figure to Jesus.
"Lord",  she said.  "If you had had been here my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you anything you ask."**
Jesus said to Martha, "I am the one who gives people life and makes them live again."
When Mary came to see Jesus  she was crying.
    Walk Mary figure to Jesus.
    Jesus cried, too.
Then Mary and Martha took Jesus to the tomb where Lazarus body was.
Walk Jesus, Mary Martha and some of the followers to the rocks.
Jesus told them to take the stone away from the entrance.
But Martha said, "Oh no! He has been dead for 4 days.  If we roll the stone away it will smell bad!"
Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"***
So someone rolled away the stone.
    Remove the stone
Jesus prayed and thanked God. Then he called in a loud voice.
    "Lazarus come out!"
Lazarus walked right out of the cave.
Place Lazarus figure in front of Jesus.
He was still all wrapped up in the grave cloths.
Jesus told them to take the grave cloths off him and let him go.
    Remove the tissue from Lazarus.
Jesus could have gone to see Lazarus right away and healed him before he died.
Why do you think Jesus waited until Lazarus died to go to him?
Because Jesus wanted people to know that He could make people alive again.
Why can Jesus make people alive again?
    Because He is God.
Jesus wanted those people to know that He is God.
So He didn't just tell them.  He showed them by raising Lazarus from the dead.
What other things had Jesus done that show that He is God?
    Healed the sick,
    Made blind people see
    Made crippled people walk
Jesus wants us to know that He is God, too.
Someday Jesus is going to to come back to the world.
He is going to make everyone who ever died alive again.
He is going to take everyone who trusts in Him to live with Him forever.
