  • Tell the class:

  • Snack Game:  Listen Hunt/Cheerio Bingo

    Before class:

Copy a bingo card for each child.
Put some cheerios into a container and hide it somewhere in the room.
Today we're learning that Jesus wants us to be good listeners so we're going to play a listening game.
There is something hidden in the room that you have to find.
They are going to have to listen carefully as you give them verbal clues to find it.
Proceed to give them a variety of verbal clues such as:
    Whispering a clue,
Whispering a clue to the first child, who has to whisper it to the next, etc.
Saying a clue with funny accent,
    etc.
After they find the cereal give each child:
    a bingo card,
    some cheerios, and
    play bingo with them:
tell them that you are going to give them letters that spell a secret message.
Randomly give them the letters for the word, "listen"
    Once they get "bingo":
they should all get Bingo at the same time,
ask them what the secret message is.
For younger children, help them sound it out.
Remind them that today we're learning that  Jesus wants us to be good listeners.
Let them eat the their cheerios.

Bingo Cards print out, enlarge if necessary,
and make 1 copy per child.

  • Closing Discussion

  • Close in Prayer:

  • Telling the Story:

Bring the story mat, the Christ figure, the women figures and blocks to the story circle,  but don't set them up.

Today we're learning that Jesus wants us to be good listeners.
We're going to do to something different today.
I'm going to read a story from the Bible to you.
I want you to listen carefully because when I'm done, I want you to tell me the story and act it out with the Bible mat and the Bible figures.
Read the story from Luke 10: 38-42 to the children.
Help them set up the story and act it out with the figures as they retell it to you.
    Who was listening to Jesus?
    Mary
    Who wasn't listening to Jesus?
    Martha
Why wasn't Martha listening to Jesus?
    She was too busy
How do you feel when someone is so busy that they're not listening to you?
    Discuss kids answers
What was the right thing that Jesus said Mary chose?
    She listened to Him
Why is it important to listen to Jesus?
    Discuss kids answers
How can we listen to Jesus?
    Discuss kids answers
What can you do or say to someone who isn't really listening to you?
    Discuss kids answers
Do you want a friend who does all the talking and never listens to you?
    Discuss kids answers
How can you be a good friend to someone?
Don't be too busy to listen,
    Don't do all the talking
Ask each child to think of someone whom they could be a better listener to.
Close asking God to help us be better listeners to Jesus and to our friends and family.
