    Today's Story:

    Jesus calms a storm.
    Matthew 8, Mark 4, Luke 8
    Optional Memory verse: Isaiah 1:1b
"Don't be afraid because I have saved you.
I have called you by name and you are mine."
International Children's Bible, New Century Version
Jesus wants us to trust him even when we're afraid.
  • Materials Needed:
    Promised Land Mat
    Adult Christ figure.
    Toy boat
5 or 6 Fisher Price or similar type men figures
    masking tape

  • Action Game: Crossing the Stormy Sea
Make a sea crossing from one side of the room to the other:
Make a single line of masking tape zigzag across the room, but
Leave gaps to represent places where "the wind and the waves" are hitting the 'boat'.
Vary the length of the gaps from short, to long enough to make it a challenge for a child to jump across.
    Object of the game:
Kids pretend they are crossing the sea in a boat.
They have to walk single file on the line of tape (like walking a tight rope) without stepping off the tape.
When they come to a place where the wind and the waves have knocked their boat (a gap in the tape),  they have to jump across and try to land on the tape.
If they miss they have to go back to the beginning.

    Closing Discussion

Close in Prayer  thanking God that Jesus is the boss of the wind and the waves. Thank God that He takes care of us even when it's scary.  Ask God to help us trust Jesus even when we're afraid.

    Telling the Story:
Last week we learned that Jesus was baptized
Lay out the Promised Land mat
After Jesus was baptized He taught people all about God.
Today we're learning about a time when Jesus' friends were afraid.
I want you to listen in the story to find out why they were afraid.
One time Jesus was teaching a crowd of people along the Sea of Galilee.
Place the Christ figure next to the Sea of Galilee
There was such a big crowd of people that Jesus got into a boat and taught the people about God from the boat.
Place the boat along the edge of the Sea and place Jesus in it.
Afterwards, Jesus and his disciples got into the boat and started to cross the Lake.
Let's pretend that this whole side of our story mat is the Sea of Galilee
Flip the cloth mat over to the water side.
Put Jesus and 4 or 5 Fisher Price or similar type figures into the boat.
Jesus was tired so he laid down in the boat and went to sleep.
    Lay Christ figure down.
Make the boat "sail" a little way out into the sea
While he was asleep a storm came up.
I need you to make a sound like the wind.
Direct the kids to make a blowing sound.
Now I need all of you take a hold of the edge of the cloth mat and gently shake it to make waves.
Direct the kids to make the boat bounce but to not let it tip over.
    The disciples got very scared.
Water was splashing over the sides of the boat.
They were sure that the boat was going to tip over and that they were all going to drown.
    But Jesus didn't wake up.
So the disciples went to Jesus and woke him up.
Act this out with 2 or 3 figures
"Lord! Save us!"  they cried.  "We will drown!"
    Stand Christ figure up.
"Why are you afraid?" Jesus answered them. "You don't have enough faith."*
Then Jesus commanded the wind and the sea to stop.
Direct the kids to stop making waves.
    The wind stopped blowing.
    And the sea became calm.
The disciples were amazed.  "They said, 'What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!'"*
Discuss times when they've felt afraid

  • Optional Snack:  Stormy Sea Pudding
Give each child a small paper plate and a plastic spoon
Give them a large spoon full of 2 different kinds of pudding such as chocolate and butterscotch (or pudding and whipped cream).
Have them use their spoons to draw waves of pudding on their plates before eating it.
