| Telling the Story: |
Last week we learned that Daniel,
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego became the king's helpers in Babylon.
This week we are going to learn about a
time when God protected Daniel.
-
Place Daniel figure on the mat.
-
Daniel lived in Babylon a long, long
time.
-
He lived there so long that in today's
story he was an old man.
-
If you made Daniel as a flip figure from
a young man to an old man: flip him to an old man.
-
Let's build his house out of blocks
right here:
-
Direct the kids to build a house with
blocks,
-
Help them make a window in his house.
-
There was a new king in Babylon and
Daniel became his most important helper, too.
-
Place king figure on the mat
-
Why do you think Daniel was such a
good helper?
-
Because he loved God, always worked
hard, did his best, and never cheated.
-
Well the new king put Daniel in charge
of all his other helpers.
-
Place 2 or 3 men figures next to the
king to represent the king's other helpers.
-
These helpers did not want Daniel to be
their boss.
-
So they tried to figure out a way to
get Daniel in trouble with the king.
-
But Daniel never did anything wrong.
-
So the helpers decided that the only
way to get Daniel in trouble was to make trouble for him because he followed God.
-
Three times everyday Daniel would go
into his house.
-
Walk Daniel figure to his house
-
And every time he would kneel down in
front of his window and pray to God.
-
Put Daniel in front of his window.
-
The king's helpers knew that Daniel
prayed to his God everyday in front of his window.
-
So they went to the king.
-
Walk the figures to the king.
-
"Oh great king", they
said. "We think you should make a new law that no one is allowed to pray to
anyone but you.
-
If any one does he should be thrown
into a pit with hungry lions."
-
Well the king thought this was a good
idea.
-
So the king wrote down the new law and
declared it throughout the land.
-
And no one could change the law.
-
As soon as the king made this new
law, the king's evil helpers spied on Daniel.
-
Place the figures outside Daniel's
house.
-
They wanted to catch Daniel praying to
his God.
-
Now Daniel knew about this new law.
-
But he wasn't afraid.
-
He went right to his window and kneeled
down and prayed to God just like he always had.
-
Place Daniel on his face in front of his
window.
-
Immediately the king's helpers ran to
the king and told on Daniel.
-
Walk their figures to the king.
-
The king liked Daniel very much.
-
He did not want to throw Daniel into a
pit with hungry lions.
-
So he spent all day trying to figure
out a way to save Daniel.
-
Pace King figure back and forth.
-
But he could not think of anything.
-
Finally that night he had to let his
evil helpers take Daniel to the lion's den.
-
Make a circle of stones big enough to
lay Daniel in.
-
Place a lion in there if you have one.
-
Place Daniel and the king next to the
lion's den.
-
But before he let them throw Daniel
into the pit, he said to Daniel, "I hope the God you serve saves
you."
-
Then he let his evil servants throw
Daniel into the pit with the hungry lions.
-
Place Daniel figure into the pit.
-
That night in his palace, the king
could not eat.
-
Walk the king to another place and pace
him back and forth.
-
He could not sleep.
-
Lay him down and make him toss and turn.
-
Finally, when it was morning, the king
rushed out of bed and went straight to the lion's den.
-
Rush king figure to the lion's pit.
-
He called down to Daniel,
"Daniel, servant of the living God! Has your God that you always worship been
able to save you from the lions?"*
-
Daniel answered the king,
"My God has sent his angel to close the lions' mouths."
-
The king was so happy. He had
Daniel pulled out of the lion's pit.
-
Not one lion had even put a scratch on
Daniel.
-
God protected Daniel from the hungry
lions.

Closing Discussion
-
Discuss times when the children feel
afraid.
-
e.g. at night, of the dark, of scary
animals, etc.
-
| What should we do when we feel
afraid? | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
Action Game: "Daniel,
Daniel, Lions!
-
| Play Duck, Duck, Goose with the
words, "Daniel, Daniel, LIONS!"
| |
Optional
Snack: Lion faces
-
Give each
child a round cracker and a slice of American cheese
-
The cracker is
the lion's face
-
The cheese will
be the mane
-
They should bite a
hole in the center of the cheese,
-
Then break off
little pieces of cheese from the outer edges to make it rough looking like a lion's mane.
-
Place the center
hole of the cheese on top of the cracker,
-
| Place little bits of
cheese on the cracker face to make the eyes and the nose.
