  • Telling the Story:
Let's put the Babylon mat that you made right here and the Promised Land way over here.
Direct the kids to put the Promised Land on the other side of the room from Babylon.
Last week we learned that Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego became the king's helpers in Babylon.
This week we are going to learn about a time when God protected Daniel.
Place Daniel figure on the mat.
Daniel lived in Babylon a long, long time.
He lived there so long that in today's story he was an old man.
If you made Daniel as a flip figure from a young man to an old man: flip him to an old man.
Let's build his house out of blocks right here:
Direct the kids to build a house with blocks,
Help them make a window in his house.
There was a new king in Babylon and Daniel became his most important helper, too.
Place king figure on the mat
Why do you think Daniel was such a good helper?
Because he loved God, always worked hard, did his best, and never cheated.
Well the new king put Daniel in charge of all his other helpers.
Place 2 or 3 men figures next to the king to represent the king's other helpers.
These helpers did not want Daniel to be their boss.
So they tried to figure out a way to get Daniel in trouble with the king.
But Daniel never did anything wrong.
So the helpers decided that the only way to get Daniel in trouble  was to make trouble for him because he followed God.
Three times everyday Daniel would go into his house.
Walk Daniel figure to his house
And every time he would kneel down in front of his window and pray to God.
Put Daniel in front of his window.
The king's helpers knew that Daniel prayed to his God everyday in front of his window.
So they went to the king.
Walk the figures to the king.
"Oh great king", they said.  "We think you should make a new law that no one is allowed to pray to anyone but you.
If any one does he should be thrown into a pit with hungry lions."
Well the king thought this was a good idea.
So the king wrote down the new law and declared it throughout the land.
And no one could change the law.
As soon as the king made this new law,  the king's evil helpers spied on Daniel.
Place the figures outside Daniel's house.
They wanted to catch Daniel praying to his God.
Now Daniel knew about this new law.
    But he wasn't afraid.
He went right to his window and kneeled down and prayed to God just like he always had.
Place Daniel on his face in front of his window.
Immediately the king's helpers ran to the king and told on Daniel.
Walk their figures to the king.
The king liked Daniel very much.
He did not want to throw Daniel into a pit with hungry lions.
So he spent all day trying to figure out a way to save Daniel.
Pace King figure back and forth.
But he could not think of anything.
Finally that night he had to let his evil helpers take Daniel to the lion's den.
Make a circle of stones big enough to lay Daniel in.
Place a lion in there if you have one.
Place Daniel and the king next to the lion's den.
But before he let them throw Daniel into the pit,  he said to Daniel,  "I hope the God you serve saves you."
Then he let his evil servants throw Daniel into the pit with the hungry lions.
Place Daniel figure into the pit.
That night in his palace, the king could not eat.
Walk the king to another place and pace him back and forth.
    He could not sleep.
Lay him down and make him toss and turn.
Finally, when it was morning, the king rushed out of bed and went straight to the lion's den.
Rush king figure to the lion's pit.
He called down to Daniel,  "Daniel, servant of the living God!  Has your God that you always worship been able to save you from the lions?"*
Daniel answered the king,  "My God has sent his angel to close the lions' mouths."
The king was so happy.  He had Daniel pulled out of the lion's pit.
Not one lion had even put a scratch on Daniel.
God protected Daniel from the hungry lions.
    God is our protector, too
Discuss times when the children feel afraid.
e.g. at night, of the dark, of scary animals, etc.
What should we do when we feel afraid?
Talk to God and tell him what's scaring us.
Ask God to protect us like he protected Daniel from the hungry lions.
thanking God that He protects us,
asking Him to help us pray to him when we're scared.
And asking him to help us remember how he protected Daniel.
