Have a relay race with 2 coats:

    1 big and 1 small.
Have the kids line up in 2 lines.
Place the coats in a designated spot across the room.
The kids run to the coats.
The child to get to the coats first chooses the biggest one and runs it back to his team.
The slower child must take the small coat to his team.
The children next  in line take the coats back to the designated spot and return to the end of the line.
The next team members race for the coats.
The race continues until everyone has had a turn to race.
The team that ends up with the big coat wins.

  • Closing Discussion

  • Close in Prayer asking God to help us obey Him.

    Telling the Story:
In today's game you raced to get the biggest coat.
In today's story we're going to hear about a coat.
We're also going to hear about something big and something little.
Listen carefully to find out why there is a coat in the story and to find out what is big and what is little.
Lay out the Promised Land mat.
Place the temple near the Dead Sea.
    Place Solomon near the temple.
Last week we learned that Solomon married princesses from far away lands.
These princesses convinced him to make pretend gods.
Build towers of blocks and place them in the Promised Land.
God was not happy with King Solomon for making pretend gods in the Promised Land.
He warned King Solomon 2 times to stop making pretend gods.
But King Solomon would not listen.
Finally God told King Solomon that he was going to tear the biggest part of the kingdom away from him and give it to one of his helpers.
That means that God was going to make someone else king over the biggest part of the Promised Land.
This was Solomon's helper.  His name was Jereboam.  We're going to call him Jerry.
Show children the man figure and place him on the mat.
God sent a special messenger called a prophet to talk to Jerry.
Show the children the prophet with the construction paper coat and place the him on the mat.
The prophet was wearing a brand new coat.
Point out the construction paper coat.
When the prophet found Jerry.  He did something really silly.
    Walk prophet figure to Jerry
He took off his coat and tore it up.
Remove the construction paper coat and tear it into 2 pieces:
    1 very large piece
    1 very small piece.
    The prophet said to Jerry,
"King Solomon has been worshipping pretend gods.  So God is tearing  the biggest part of the kingdom away from him and giving it to you.
You are going to become the king of the biggest part of the Promised Land"
Lay the biggest part of the coat at Jerry's feet
"But God is going to let King Solomon's family be king over a little part of the Promised Land because God had promised Solomon's father that someone from his family would always be king."
Lay the small piece of coat at Solomon's feet.
After King Solomon died, Jerry did become the king of the biggest part of the Promised Land.
Place Jerry figure in the area above the Dead Sea.
Lets pretend that this is Jerry after he became king
Place Northern king  figure in the "Northern Kingdom" above the Dead Sea and remove the Jerry figure from the mat.
King Jerry was the king over this whole part of the Promised Land
Point out the area of the mat from the top of the Dead Sea all the way to the top of the mat above the Sea of Galilee
Let's make a wall separating the part that Jerry was king of from the part that King Solomon's family ruled
Direct the kids to build a wall with a row of blocks from the top of the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
King Solomon's son became king of the small part of the Promised Land down here.
Point out the area from the Dead Sea to the bottom of the mat.
Turn king Solomon around several times to indicate that he died and his son became king in his place (or if you made a flip figure, flip his cloak over his head.)
Now there are 2 kings in the Promised Land.
What did you learn about a coat in today's story?
God's messenger had on a new coat
God's messenger tore his coat into pieces
God's messenger gave the big piece to a new king
He gave the little piece to King Solomon
Why did God's messenger tear up his coat?
To show that God was going to give the biggest part of the Promised land to a new king.
In our game what did you have to do to get the biggest coat?
    Win it in a race
Did King Jerry win the biggest part of the Promised Land?
No. God gave it to him
Why did God give the biggest part of the Promised Land to a new king?
Because King Solomon did not obey God
God wants us to obey Him, too.
    How can we obey God?
By asking Jesus to forgive us for all the wrong things we do and to live inside us and be our special friend.
    By learning about him
    By hearing Bible stories
    By praying to Him, etc.
