    Today's Story:

The promise of a son and Abram gets a new name
    Genesis 15:1-6 and Genesis 17:1-8
    Optional Memory verse:
The Lord will keep his promises.
With love he takes care of all he has made.    Ps 145:13b
(International Children's Bible, New Century Version)
    God always keeps His promises
  • Materials Needed:

    Cloth, Bible mat,
    Abram figure,
    Construction paper tent:
Piece of construction paper cut to about 10" x 6"
    and folded in half,
    Masking tape,
    Play dough, (optional)
    Star cookie cutters, (optional)

  • Action Game: Too Many Stars

Put masking tape X's (or *'s) all over the floor
    to represent stars.
Have the kids try to run and step on every star before
    you can count to 30.
    Repeat counting to only 20.
Keep repeating and reducing the time until they
can't do it because there are "too many stars".
Tell the children that today they are going to hear
a story about Abram trying to count all the stars in
the sky, but there were too many.

  • Alternative to craft:  Kids will use their hands to be
    stars during story time.

    Optional Craft
With play dough and star cookie cutters have the kids make lots of stars.
Save the stars to use in today's story.

  • Telling the Story:

Lay out the mat and review last week's lesson:

God told Abram to move to this special land.
God promised Abram that someday all this land would belong to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
    Abram lived in a tent
    Add construction paper tent.
Put Abram just inside the door.
In today's story there is a sky full of stars,
Show them how to be stars by holding their hands up and opening and closing them, like flicking water off their fingers, (or holding up the play dough stars they made),
Hold your hands in your lap and listen carefully for the part in the story when I need you to be the stars.

    Act out the Story:

God talked to Abram one night when he was in his tent.
    Point to Abram figure
God promised him he would give him many blessings or things.
But Abram was sad and said, "But God,  I have no son to give all my things to when I die.  A servant will get all I own when I'm gone."
But God said, "No servant will get what you have, because I am going to give you a son".
God told Abram to go outside and look up at the night sky and try to count all the stars in the sky.
Bring Abram figure outside of tent and
Direct kids to use their hands to be the stars (or hold up their play dough stars).
Do you think Abram could count all the stars?
No, Abram couldn't count all the stars .  There were too many.
Just like there were too many stars in the sky for Abram to count, Abram would have so many grandchildren and great grandchildren that
Abram would never be able to count them all.
In fact Abram would have so many grandchildren and great children that God changed his name to Abraham which means "Father of many nations" or people.
Abraham believed God even though he was very old, too old to have children.
    God gave Abraham 2 promises:
Do you remember what those 2 promises were?
God promised to give Abraham's family this special land.
God promised to give Abraham a son.

Close in Prayer thanking God that He keeps all His promises.
