Put it among the branches of the toy tree or branch.
Put 2 or 3 rocks at base of tree to make it look more like a bush.

  • Action Game: Burning bush
Tell the children that in today's story God is going to give Moses a special message from a burning bush.
Put some chairs in a cluster to represent a burning bush.
Divide the children into 2 groups.
The children will be God's voice speaking out of the bush.
The children will be the flames by shimmying up and down among the chairs.
The groups will alternate going up and down.
When the first group shimmies up, they are to say:
"Moses!  Tell Pharaoh to let my people go!"
When the second group shimmies up, they are to say,
"Lead my people to the Promised Land."

  • Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer:  asking God to help us obey even when it's scary.

    Telling the Story:
God's people are far away from the Promised Land.
Have the kids put the Promised Land mat in a far away place in the room.
    Add Egypt mat.
Last week we learned that Pharaoh did not like God's people living in the land of Egypt.
Add evil Pharaoh figure to Egypt and a few blocks to represent his palace.
Remember from last week's story, we learned that Moses grew up in the palace like a Prince
Add Moses figure.  (if you made him a flip figure,  use his prince side).
Today we're going to learn about a time when Moses was scared.
One day Moses did something that made Pharaoh so angry that Moses ran away to the hills.
Have Moses run away to an edge of the Egypt mat.
He met a man there who was a shepherd.
Add Fisher Price or similar type man figure.
    Add some toy sheep (optional).
    He married the shepherd's daughter.
Add Fisher Price or similar type woman figure.
Moses became a shepherd, too.  He wasn't a prince any more.
If you made Moses a flip figure, flip to Moses the shepherd.
Moses lived far away from Pharaoh and worked as a shepherd for a long, long time.
While Moses was living far away, what do you think was happening to God's people?
Add the people to Egypt that the children made in last week's lesson.
Pharaoh was being as mean as he could be to God's people.
He made God's people work so hard that they that cried out to God for help.
Do you think God heard them?
    Yes, God did hear them.
One day while Moses was watching his sheep he saw a bush that was on fire.
    Add burning bush.
But the bush wasn't burning up.
Moses was so curious about the bush that that he walked right up to it to have a closer look.
Walk Moses figure to the bush.
Suddenly a voice talked to Moses out of the bush.
    The voice said,
    "Moses! Take off your  sandals.
"I am the God of your fathers."
"I have a message for you to tell Pharaoh."
What do you think Moses was to tell Pharaoh
Review "Let my people go!" with the kids.
The voice also said to Moses,
"I have a job for you to do."
What job do you think God wanted Moses to do?
Review, "Lead my people to the Promised Land".
Do you think Moses was happy with the job that God gave him to do?
The Bible tells us that Moses was scared to go to Pharaoh.
In fact, he was so scared that he tried to convince God to get someone else to go to Pharaoh instead of him.
Do you think Moses obeyed God even though he was scared?
Next week we'll find out if Moses obeyed God.
Discuss with kids the times that they've felt scared to do something they were supposed to do.
God wants us to obey even when it's scary.

    Optional Snack: animal crackers

Give kids animal crackers and let them find sheep, reminding them that Moses is a shepherd now instead of a prince.

    Optional Action Game:

Play 'Duck, Duck, Goose with the words, "Moses, Moses, Pharaoh"
