Crafts for Today's Story: Have the kids make the following
items to be used in today's lesson.

  • Introductory Craft 1:  Play Dough Crowd
Have kids make a crowd for today's story by making lots of play dough people
Have them roll a barrel for a body and add a round head.
Save the people they make for today's and next week's story.
Introductory Craft 2: Construction Paper Grass
Have the kids make grass from construction paper to hide baby Moses in,
Use long strips of green construction paper about 3" wide.
Have the kids make snips along one edge of each strip to make grass.
    Set aside for today's story.

  • Action Game: Hiding in the Grass
Tell the children that in today's story they are going to be learning about Moses.
    Blindfold 1 child.
Have the other children scatter around the room and find a place to stand.   Once they pick a spot, they have to stay there.
The blindfolded child asks, "Where's Moses?".
All the other children have to answer, "Hiding in the grass."
The blindfolded child continues to ask, "Where's Moses?" and follows the voices of the children responding until he tags one of them.
The tagged child is next to be it.

  • Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer: thanking God that He takes care of us even when others want to hurt us.

    Telling the Story:
God's people are far away from the Promised Land.
Have the kids put the Promised Land mat in a far away place in the room.
    Add Egypt mat.
Joseph's family grew old and died in Egypt.
Their children and grandchildren lived in Egypt, too.
Add some of the play dough people that the children made earlier to Egypt.
Their children and grandchildren had lots and lots of children.
Add rest of play dough people.
The Pharaoh who had been Joseph's friend grew old and died.   There was a new Pharaoh in the land.
Add evil pharaoh figure, (if you made a flip figure, show good pharaoh and flip to evil pharaoh).
Add some blocks or Lego's for a palace.
This pharaoh did not like God's people living in the land of Egypt.
He complained, "There are too many of these people of Israel!"
God's people were called the people of Israel.
So Pharaoh made all of God's people become his slaves.
He made them make bricks and work very hard.
But Pharaoh was still unhappy with God's people.
    He complained even more,
Let the children be Pharaoh's voice and say with you,  "There are too many of these people of Israel!"
Finally Pharaoh made God's people throw all their baby boys into the river so they would drown.
But one mother hid her baby boy.
Add Fisher Price or similar type figure to be Moses' mother.
She made a little boat out of a basket and put her baby boy inside.
Show baby Moses figure in the peanut shell.
Then she took the basket and hid it in the tall grasses growing in the river.
Tape the grasses the children made along the river and put the Baby Moses figure among the grasses.
Moses' big sister hid among the grasses to see what would happen to her baby brother.
    Add girl figure.
Soon Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river.  She was a princess.
Add Fisher Price or similar type figure to be the Princess.
The Princess found Baby Moses when she heard him crying.
She took baby Moses home and made him her own little boy.
Have Princess take Moses back to the palace.
Moses grew up in the palace with the Princess as his mother.
He grew to a big boy and finally to a man.
Add Moses figure (as a prince if you made the flip figure).
Moses lived just like a Prince in the palace with the Princess.
Discuss what it must have been like to grow up in a palace.
Discuss how God took care of Moses even though Pharaoh wanted to hurt baby boys.
Have kids think of times when someone has tried to hurt them, and discuss how God takes care of them.
  • Optional Snack: peanuts or rice krispy bricks

Option 1:  peanuts in the shell
    Option 2: Rice Krispy bricks
Before class make rice krispy squares following the recipe on a box of Rice Krispies.
Give each child a rice krispy square and a plastic knife and let each "make bricks" like God's people by cutting them into small squares.
