    Cut each trumpet about:

    9" from top to bottom,
    8" wide at the top,
    5" wide at the bottom

  • Action Game:   Into the City - a take off on Musical Chairs:
Set up a circle of chairs, one per child, each chair facing outward,
Leave a gap between 2 chairs to be the city gate.
    Tell the children:
That inside the chairs is a city.
The chairs around it are the city walls.
The gap between the 2 chairs is the city gate.
Each child sits in a chair until you play some music (or sing part of a song).
The children must march around the city while the music plays.
The object of this game is to get into the city through the gate, not to find an empty chair.
Stop the music and the child nearest the city gate gets to go "into the city".
Repeat until every child makes it into the city.

  • Closing Discussion:

  • Close in Prayer  thanking God that He always makes a way for us to follow Him.

    Telling the Story:
Lay out the Promised Land mat.
Last week God's people finally entered the Promised Land.
How did God's people get into the Promised Land?
Review last week's lesson of crossing the Jordan on dry ground.
Joshua was the leader of God's people.
Put Joshua figure in Promised Land next to the river.
Joshua and God's people were camped next to the Jordan River.
Add Fisher Price or similar type figures.
There was a city called Jericho right here.
Point to a spot between the river and the Mediterranean Sea.
Jericho had strong walls all around it.
Direct the kids to make a square of blocks stacked 2 or 3 high to represent Jericho.
God told Joshua to take over the city of Jericho.
In our game today you got into our city of chairs through a pretend gate.
But the city gates in Jericho were shut tight and locked up so no one could get in.
Make sure there are no gaps in the blocks.
The walls of the city are too high and wide for God's people to climb over.
In today's story you're going to hear how God makes a way for God's people to get into the city.
God always makes a way for His people to follow Him.
God told Joshua to have their army and their priests march around the city of Jericho one time a day for 7 days.
First some soldiers were to march.
Use 1 or 2 of the figures to represent the soldiers, and place them next to Jericho.
Next came some of the priests blowing trumpets.
Use a figure to represent the priests and put it behind the "soldiers".
Then came priests carrying the special Box of the Agreement that had God's laws inside.
Add the "matchbox" Box of the Agreement and a figure to represent the priests who carried the box.
    Last came some more soldiers.
Use a figure to represent the soldiers and place them at the end of the line.
They were to march around the city 1 time every day for 7 days.
While I move the figures around the city 1 time, you make the sound of the trumpets that the priests blew, like this,  "Doo da doo".
Direct the kids to be the trumpet blowers. (If they made cardboard trumpets earlier, the kids can use the trumpets they made).
Move the figures and the matchbox around the block city 1 time.
The soldiers and the priests did this one time a day for 6 days.
    Let's count together to 6.
Have the kids count with you while you circle the block city with your finger 6 times.
Then on the 7'th day, the people marched around the city of Jericho 7 times.
The last time around, Joshua told them all to be quiet except the priests blowing the trumpets.
They were not to make a sound until Joshua told them, "Shout! The Lord has given you the city!
Then everyone gave a great shout and the walls of Jericho fell over and the soldiers rushed in and took over the city.
Lets pretend its the last time God's people are marching around the city.
When you hear me say, "Shout! The Lord has given you the city!" ,  I want you all to shout, "Hey!" and knock the walls down.
Direct some kids to march around the Promised Land mat blowing their trumpets.
Direct the rest of the kids to move the figures around the block city one time.
After all the kids have completed their tasks have them all sit down.
Give the command, "Shout . . ." and direct them to knock the walls down.
God's people rushed into the city right over the tumbled down walls.
Move the figures into the middle of the knocked down blocks.
How did God make a way for His people to get into the city of Jericho?
Discuss how God makes ways for us to follow Him.
